Deep Tissue Massage, is just that. It is a massage that reaches the deeper tissues, or muscles, of the body. These deeper muscles tend to hold a lot of tension because they tend to take more of the body's weight and take more use. Deep tissue massage is applied using more pressure than the usual swedish massage technique. Therefore some people can find it painful while the majority of people who choose it enjoy it because it gets out more of the tension and lactic acid build ups which cause what we call knots. Deep tissue can be very soothing in the way that it really relieves the muscle tension.
Sports massage is a technique which combines the styles of swedish, deep tissue, and percussion massage. There are three different ways to practice the sports massage technique. There is sports massage for training, to warm up before an event, and to cool down after an event. Sports massage in the use for training is generally focused on having the whole body working together in harmony. It is about working on the muscles that are mostly going to be used in whatever sports the athlete is training for, and also the surrounding and supporting muscles. Sports massage used for warming up before an event is approached with a more uplifting speedy feel. Rather than to relax, it is used to pump up the athlete and the muscles before they go and work. This might include fast paced deep efflourage strokes, choppy percussion strokes, and basically fast, slightly rough massage that will wake and warm up the muscles. Then there is the post-event massage. This is a technique used to cool down the body and the muscles after a sporting event. This would include a lot of stretching to the individual muscles, as well as soothing and getting the oxygen and blood flowing regularly again.
